What is Uber and how does it work?

Uber is a rideshare company which allows you to book rides with a driver through an app on your phone, paying a fixed fare upfront rather than a metred rate at the end of your trip. An Uber ride can also be booked on their website or over the phone, but you will still need to create an Uber account to pay for the trip ahead of time. Alternatively, a family member or loved one can book the trip for you. They can also create you an account that is linked to theirs for simplified use.

Using the app, you can track the location of your driver as they come to pick you up, along with their name and their car’s license plate and model. During the trip, the driver will take a pre-arranged route and both you and your loved ones can follow the journey in real time. Once you arrive at your destination, you can exit the car without needing to pay. If you need a return trip, simply request another booking using the same method again.

Booking a taxi via an app or website

Similarly to Uber, many taxi services now have the option for you to book a taxi via an app or website, in addition requesting a ride over the phone or hailing an available car. This option allows you to be charged a fixed fare and know the cost of your ride upfront, rather than paying a metered fare as your journey progresses. However, while taxi apps or websites will still allow you to pay the driver cash, often a card payment will be required to lock in the fixed fare price when making the booking. You will still be able to see a price estimate if you choose to pay for your booking with cash, but the fare may differ slightly from the price you initially are shown.

Key differences between taxis and Ubers

Overall, both taxis and Uber do offer very similar services. However, there are a few important differences to note.

• If you are a member of your state’s taxi subsidy scheme, you won’t be able to use your vouchers or smartcard on Uber rides (except in Victoria).
• Uber is a cashless service. Payments must be made upfront via a credit or debit card no matter how you book the ride.
• Unlike a standard taxi meter, Uber prices can be subject to surge pricing. This means while prices may be lower during quiet periods, busy periods can cause price jumps.
• Ubers can be many different car models. Always confirm the car’s license plate matches the one stated in the app.

Things to consider

Some of our community have said they find the Uber app accessible, while others have told us they cannot use it and prefer to phone a taxi company directly. Other points to consider might include needing to read a license plate to identify your Uber car and needing to navigate an internal complaints process using the Uber app or website if something goes wrong, rather than just calling someone.
