Karen Warwick

Orientation and Mobility Specialist, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT
I am a certified and registered Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist (Certification through ACVREP - Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals. Registration is with OMAA - Orientation and Mobility Association Australasia).
I have worked in the industry now for 25 years as an O&M specialist teaching adults and children how to stay oriented to their surroundings, how to mobilise with greater confidence and how to make the best use of any residual vision and remaining senses.
I have presented both domestically and internationally on a case study aiming to demonstrate how collaboration with allied health professionals, namely physiotherapists, can significantly improve functional outcomes for those with very low vision.
Over the last 10years I have assisted in supervising those entering into the field of Orientation and Mobility internally with Guide Dogs
Over the last 2 years I have acted as Techniques Tutor at the University of NSW assisting with the practical component of the Graduate Diploma of Orientation and Mobility.
I have worked for 3 different blindness and low vision agencies throughout my career. After I had moved cities some years ago, I worked as a physiotherapy assistant for a short period of time at a private hospital in the day rehabilitation centre. I provided physical therapy instruction as directed by the physiotherapy team.
Currently I am also part of the VLife team at Guide Dogs - a program designed to support those with blindness or low vision to improve their strength and balance whilst completing their day to day activities. VLife is an adaptation of the LIFE (Lifestyle-integrated Functional Exercise) program which takes into consideration the needs of those who are blind or have low vision.
