Summary

Job Access is the Australian Government’s national disability employment hub, with information and support for people living with a disability, including low vision. It provides information about different employment services and advocacy groups in Australia, as well as support for both employees and employers to create accessible workplaces. Resources are available for people at any stage of their employment journey, from preparing for work with training to applying for jobs and beginning or continuing work with a disability.

Support provided by Job Access

Employment support

If you are adjusting to changes in your vision, Job Access can support you to keep working or find work by directing you to different resources and services. This can include connecting you to work experience and training, advice for navigating the application process including talking about your low vision, and funding to support you while you look for work and to modify your workplace through the Employment Access Fund. Read our article to learn more about the Employment Access Fund.

Employer support

Job Access also provides support for employers to create accessible workplaces. It provides information about the benefits of hiring people living with disabilities, financial support for workplace accommodations to support accessibility, and training and resources for employers and employees to promote inclusion at work. Their Employer Toolkit contains a series of video guides, factsheets and checklists employers can use to help understand how to support you best at work.

Job Access phone line

The Job Access phone line is available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 7 pm AEDT/AET. If you have questions about working with low vision, including your rights and support available to you, you can call Job Access on 1800 464 800 to speak to a member of their team confidentially and for free.

Visit the Job Access website to learn more about support options for navigating employment with low vision.

Remember

Your right to employment is protected under the Australian Disability Discrimination Act. This includes support for making reasonable adjustments and the right to work in an inclusive and accessible environment. To learn more about your rights in the workplace or when applying for a job, read our article on your rights at work.
